I get why it feels icky to you--it feels to me too like another level of adopted baby as commodity...and then there is the level that having more $ enables more privilege and it is almost like the baby becomes like the $...greater access to goods etc... there is more that I could say--something about the degree of difference between the adoptee's roots and the rich person/celebrity's situation--makes for a bigger feeling of the waif being rescued...

My birthday is coming up in a week and while i have mostly been so busy and distracted with a lot of other intensity in my life...still--there are moments, stretches of time when it brings up big feelings..
